What is an Emotional Support Dog?
An Emotional Support Dog (or ESA) is a legal term used in the United States of America to describe an animal that provides therapeutic benefits to its handler or owner through affection and companionship. These dogs are crucial for individuals suffering from various mental and emotional conditions. Unlike service dogs, an emotional support dog is not required to perform specific tasks related to a disability; their primary role is to offer emotional stability and unconditional love. They can assist with issues such as anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, mood disorders, panic attacks, fear, phobias, and other psychological conditions. Emotional support dogs are protected under federal law.

Living with your emotional support dog is facilitated by the Fair Housing Amendments Act (FHAA), which grants individuals the right to reside with their emotional support dog, even in buildings or residences that enforce a no-pet policy. Landlords or building managers cannot refuse your emotional support dog, provided you have a current (within the past year) letter from a doctor or mental health professional recommending your emotional support animal for your condition.
Flying with your emotional support dog is also made easier by the Air Carrier Access Act (ACAA), which allows emotional support dogs on airplanes when individuals with these animals are traveling.
